What we liked about this one is how complete it feels as a package. It has the practicality and driving position of an SUV, but it never really drives like one. The M40i feels properly quick, the steering and chassis are much more car-like than you would expect, and this particular example feels especially tight and well put together on the road.

The specification helps massively. It has the Comfort Package, M Sport Plus Package, Harman Kardon audio, Apple CarPlay, Comfort Access, acoustic glazing, adaptive M suspension, electrically folding anti-dazzle mirrors, sun protection glass and 21-inch Cerium Grey 718 M wheels. Inside, the black Vernasca leather with contrast stitching and BMW Individual Piano Black trim keeps everything looking clean and understated.

Sophisto Grey suits the car really well too. It works particularly nicely with the darker exterior details and those 21-inch wheels, and gives the X4 a much more purposeful look without trying too hard.

The history is another strong point. It has remained with BMW main dealers throughout its life, with regular servicing including spark plugs at 23,161 miles and brake fluid at 32,046 miles. We have since carried out another oil service with pollen filter, air filter, brake fluid, service-light reset and wipers at 40,589 miles.

It has had three owners from new and remains completely standard.

Condition overall is very nice and supports the way the car drives. It is fitted with Bridgestone tyres all round, while we are fitting brand-new rear brakes as part of preparation rather than leaving that for the next owner.

For us, this one is really about the breadth of ability. It is fast, comfortable, practical, well specified and still genuinely enjoyable to drive, which is what made this particular X4 worth buying.
